The right haircut and colour will leave you looking and feeling your best - they can even take years off your age if that's what you're after. However, getting these wrong can make for an unflattering, ageing look.

A hairstylist spoke exclusively to GB News about how women can look "10 years younger" with the right hair salon hacks.

Hairstylist and director of extensions retailer I'm So Pretty, Lucy Conlan, stressed that colour is key.

The expert advised women to "choose a softer hair colour", explaining: "Your hair colour can either wash you out or add to the beauty of your features."

While dark colours may have suited you in your younger years, appearing chic and dynamic, Lucy claimed they may not have the same effect later down the line. Indeed, she said: "Harsh, dark colours can make fine lines more noticeable."

Now this doesn't mean women must ditch the dye altogether, or even avoid dark colours.

According to the expert, the key to a great hair colour may be a "mix of highlights and lowlights", as this can "add a natural, youthful glow to your face".

She continued: "To add dimension and brightness to your skin, choose warmer shades like honey, caramel or golden highlights."

Getting your chop right is also essential, the expert revealed. Lucy told women: "Sometimes you need to just let go and take yourself to the hairdresser for a new haircut."

Hair thinning is common with age as hair starts to grow more slowly and sparsely, and strands become more brittle. But while this is a completely natural process, the right haircuts can camouflage it.

Lucy advised: "If you have long, lifeless and thin hair, a short bob or shoulder-length cut will do wonders. It frames the face and makes your hair appear naturally fuller, creating a flattering look.

"However, avoid blunt cuts, as these can make your features look sharper - unless that’s what you're going for).

"People born with flat hair should opt for layers to add depth and dimension to their hair. This can also add more movement and bounce."

For something a little more dramatic, the expert revealed that a classic pixie cut will "help you stand out from the crowd".

Lucy said: "Not only does this naturally lift the face, but it also allows your facial features to shine. You could even add an edgy undercut for a fun twist."

Long, luscious locks are also an option. "Transform yourself into a princess with some long, beachy waves or try out a curly hairstyle to add fullness to the face," the hair guru advised.
