One-length hair tends to lack volume, lift and bounce

Grey hair can be absolutely stunning if it's taken care of properly and styled well. However, it can look lacklustre and unflattering when managed poorly.

A beauty expert with luscious grey locks revealed the mistakes that are "ruining your grey hair". She told ladies with silver strands to avoid having one-length locks.

Beauty expert, licensed esthetician and makeup artist Nikol Johnson acknowledged that going grey can be difficult - "it's very temperamental, it's very high-maintenance and it does take a lot of work".

From avoiding yellowing to retaining gloss to keeping it soft, there's a lot more that goes into grey hair than simply ceasing to dye it.

For grey-haired ladies to have the best hair possible, Nikol advised steering clear of practices that can "ruin" them.

She claimed a "mistake" that women with grey hair can make is keeping their hair all one length.

Nikol said: "We need to have some bounce and some movement." For this to happen, the hair enthusiast recommended having layers cut in.

Speaking about her own short, grey, voluminous tresses, Nikol said: "I don't have it all one length. I have shorter underneath, then sometimes a bit shorter on the side so you can see it has some movement to it.

"With the pieces at the front, my hair is angled but I do have it cut more so that it flows backwards."

According to the hair enthusiast, you want to ensure "lift" and "bounce" with your chop.

She said: "You don't want to have one layer of hair because this can drag it down and it doesn't have any of that life when you move it."

Nikol said that this is particularly important when you have grey hair, as a bit of lift and bounce will "spruce it up".

She concluded: "We need to lift it and it looks so much better when we do that."

Once you have those beautiful, bouncy layers, there are plenty of other tips and tricks you can employ for a fuller mane.

A volumising shampoo and conditioner can work wonders, although make sure you aren't using conditioner on your roots.

Blow-drying your hair upside down - ensuring you use a heat protectant first - can also be beneficial for short-term volume. For an instant fix, change up your parting. A side style will give it a boost in seconds.

In other hair news, a hair colourist weighed in on the best shade for older women - and what to avoid.

She encouraged mature ladies to steer clear of a colour that "brings all their flaws forward".
