There are lots of scents spiders don't like that can be used to deter them
Spider season in the UK is fast approaching, with homeowners likely to notice a surge in the pests indoors between September and October.
There are still, however, some ways to keep the pests at bay.
Interior expert and owner of sofabed.co.uk Steve Hamblett shared advice on how to keep your home free of spiders.
He explained the cheap or free hacks to do this, such as adding more plants to the living room.
Lavender and other plants can deter the pests

The expert stated: "Spiders dislike acidic smells and other strong scents.
"By adding plants such as mint, lemongrass, lavender or eucalyptus to your living room, due to their natural overpowering scents, it will help ward off spiders from your living room."
Using scents can be a great and easy way to ward of the unwanted insects, and there are other smells spiders won't want to go near.
Steve continued: "The best essential oil for preventing spiders is peppermint.
"Simply combine a few drops of it with some water in a spray bottle, then mist it across your living room, focusing on your sofa.
"Spiders will leave and avoid the area since they dislike the smell."
Homeowners can look to stop spiders before they even enter the property.
Keeping windows closed is one of the simplest ways to do this, as it stops warm conditions that spiders look for, according to the expert.

He added: "By keeping your windows closed during the day, you can lower the temperature of your living room by stopping heat from entering.
"Open them back up on an evening to allow a cooler breeze in once the sun goes down and the temperature drops.
"Given that spiders prefer warm surroundings, keeping your living room chilly at night will deter them."
Spider season typically lasts until the end of October in the UK following mating season, which begins at the end of summer.
