Despite widespread marketing claims, completely eliminating cellulite is not a realistic goal for most people

Cellulite, the dimpled skin texture commonly appearing on thighs, buttocks, abdomen and arms, affects countless individuals across the UK.

This distinctive appearance occurs when fat pushes through fibrous connective tissue bands that connect the skin to muscle layers beneath.

The condition is particularly prevalent in women due to hormonal factors, especially oestrogen, which plays a significant role in its development. Diets filled with excessive sugar also contribute to its appearance.

"Avoiding excessive sugar and processed foods can also prevent fat accumulation and inflammation, which may make cellulite more pronounced," explained Dermatologist Dr Hannah Kopelman.

"A balanced diet rich in lean proteins, healthy fats, and antioxidants supports collagen production and skin elasticity while staying well-hydrated helps maintain skin plumpness."

What causes cellulite?

Body composition and lifestyle factors can both contribute to the severity of cellulite.

But the condition primarily involves structural changes beneath the skin that are heavily influenced by genetics and hormones.

Even individuals maintaining healthy lifestyles can develop cellulite, as these biological factors play a more significant role than diet or exercise alone.

"Although it is often seen as undesirable, cellulite is a normal condition found in nearly everyone," noted Dr Viktoryia Kazlosukaya, from the Dermatology Circle in NYC.

Whilst various treatments exist, they typically focus on reducing visibility rather than permanent removal.

At-home treatments

At-home treatments offer limited effectiveness in addressing cellulite, with most providing only temporary improvements.

Products containing caffeine or retinol may temporarily smooth the skin by improving circulation and creating a tightening effect.

Massage tools and rollers can help reduce fluid retention and puffiness in affected areas but require consistent use to maintain any visible results. Their effects remain mild and short-lived.

In office procedures

In-office procedures offer more substantial results by targeting the underlying causes of cellulite.

Setting realistic goals is crucial when treating cellulite

"You can't completely get rid of cellulite, but preventing obesity and incorporating strength exercises to tone the muscles can help reduce its appearance," noted Dr Kazlosukaya.

"Weight control and strength exercises are beneficial, and moisturising or using anti-cellulite creams may offer additional improvement. In-office procedures are your best chance to make it look better."

Understanding that cellulite is influenced by multiple factors, including genetics and hormones, helps explain why results vary significantly between individuals, but combining a healthy lifestyle with targeted treatments offers the most practical approach to management.

While treatments can help reduce the appearance of cellulite, setting realistic expectations is crucial, as most solutions focus on minimising visibility rather than complete elimination due to the complex nature of this common condition.
