The hair that suited you in your 20s, 30s and even 40s may not flatter you the same way in middle age and beyond

If you want to look your best at any age, getting your haircut and colour right is essential.

A model and fashion influencer took to TikTok with her take on the "worst" hairstyles for women over 50.

Nerys (who goes by @nerysmiddleton1 on the sharing platform) advised women against dyeing their hair an outlandish colour.

She said: "That pink streak in your hair - what's that all about? Do people do that at home or do you go to a salon? Don't do it, it looks hideous."

While the model did not elaborate on why she isn't a fan of pink strands, some may argue that obviously or outlandishly dyed hair is not the most sophisticated.

What's more, it often requires bleaching the hair, which can be extremely damaging to its condition.

Indeed, the hair experts at HUSH Hair & Beauty explained that for brunettes, the process of going pink, or any bold colour, can be "intense" and "requires professional help".

This is because "the natural pigment in your hair must be completely bleached and stripped before the pink dye is applied".

While bleaching your hair can create a more versatile look, it can cause major damage to your strands if you aren't careful - so it's important to always have your hair bleached by a professional and learn how to care for it properly afterwards.

The hair experts at Philip Kingsley warned: "Bleaching raises your hair's outer cuticle to allow the bleaching agent to fully penetrate.

"Repeated bleaching can permanently raise your cuticle, which allows rapid and continuous loss of moisture from your strands.

"Damage from bleaching includes dry hair, brittle hair, inelastic hair, hair that is prone to breakage and hair that is prone to split ends.

"Bleached hair is also more porous and therefore more vulnerable to other chemical and non-chemical hazards. These include everything from heat-styling with blow-dryers and tongs to the effects of sun, rain and wind."

Maintaining a vibrant, "Crayola" type pink can also require lots of upkeep to retain brightness - which means more money and more bleaching.

Speaking about hairstyles to avoid over 50, Nerys also advised against the "inverted bob", which is shorter at the back and longer at the front.

Nerys stated: "A bob is stylish - you do not need it cut from the top of your head coming down."

In another video, the model shared the two haircuts she recommends for women over 50, promising that they look "beautiful and sophisticated".

While giving your hair a major revamp can work wonders in approving its appearance and condition, the way you take care of it day-to-day is important too.

A shampoo expert named the common cleansing mistake that is stripping you of "essential benefits", warning that you are probably washing your hair wrong.
