Just as the skin ages, the hair also matures and takes on new characteristics over time.
Strands become thinner and lose their pigmentation, and hair loss is more prevalent, leading to a reduction in hair density.
However, growing old does not have to mean sacrificing a beautiful barnet. GB News spoke exclusively to hairstylist and salon owner Dawna Jarvis about how women in their 50s and beyond can maintain great locks.
While many women are content with going grey, others are keen to disguise this sign of ageing for as long as possible.
Offering her expertise on which hair colours complement women over 50, Dawna advised sticking to something "natural" when dyeing.
She also recommended steering clear of shades that are "too dark". As we age, the outer layer of the skin becomes thinner and paler, so dark colours run the risk of accentuating this.
The hair guru warned: "Sometimes that can give off a gothic look and it can definitely make you look more pale. It's not as flattering."
But this doesn't mean women over 50 should ditch the dark in favour of bright blonde every time.
For middle-aged ladies who are fond of their dark strands, strategic highlights could be the key to maintaining a youthful look.
"Having a few highlights around the front of your face will keep it bright," the expert advised.
"It's like you have been in the sun - a lot of people are going for the summer, natural highlights look. That is super complementary."
Another benefit of highlights is that they can expertly camouflage greys. Dawna explained: "If you have really dark hair and really grey roots coming in, after a week or so it's very noticeable.
