A celebrity hairstylist shared his hair care tips exclusively with GB News

Regular trips to the hair salon are essential for an enviable barnet. However, the importance of at-home care must not be underestimated.

GB News spoke exclusively to a celebrity hairstylist about how women can improve their locks, focusing on those over 40.

During menopause - which typically affects women between the ages of 45 and 55 - hair can become thinner, finer and more brittle.

These changes can be compounded by damaging hair care practices, including over-bleaching, poor washing techniques, using products that strip the hair and a poor diet.

Celebrity hairstylist William Whatley stressed the importance of implementing healthy hair habits - namely, developing an effective cleansing routine.

"The number one product for women over 40 that I recommend is a great shampoo," the expert stated, "followed by a conditioner."

He explained: "Because hair over 40 is more stressed out with chemical processing due to hair colour, relaxing and perming, a great shampoo and conditioner help heal the hair, keep it from breaking and add shine."

William's favourite duo is Scruples Total Integrity Shampoo and Conditioner, although there are countless products available at health and beauty retailers tailored to specific concerns.

Don't Miss

The expert urged women over 40 not to overdo it with hair-washing, though, as this can exacerbate already-thinning hair.

"Over-shampooing can cause the hair to thin more as you age; the hair follicle becomes smaller and weaker and can fall out more easily.

"I recommend shampooing no more than two to three times a week for thinning hair in women over 40."

Sharing his conditioning tips, William advised: "To help ensure the healthiest hair for women over 40, don't forget to use a conditioner, which is a very important component after shampooing.

"It will help strengthen the hair, adding essential oils and proteins to your hair that your body and scalp are not providing.

"Ask your professional stylist which shampoo and conditioner would be perfect for your hair - especially thinning hair.

"There are many brands for thinning and fine hair. You want to make sure that it's also weightless and doesn’t have any paraffins in it that are going to cause a buildup and clog any hair follicles."

In 'Shampoo and Conditioners: What a Dermatologist Should Know?', published in the National Library of Medicine, experts explained the purpose of these essential products.

They stated: "A shampoo not only provides the cleaning of the scalp skin and hair as its primary function, but in addition also serves to condition and beautify hair and acts as an adjunct in the management of various scalp disorders.

"Hair conditioners are designed to improve hair manageability, decrease hair static electricity and add lustre."
