The senior hair stylist said we should not be applying heat to our hair every day

There are common mistakes we make when we try and look after our hair every day.

Not shampooing correctly, putting heat on our hair and not having regular haircuts are all errors which we can avoid.

Senior hair stylist at Beaumont Hair Salon, Alfie James, shared his tips on the measures you can implement to make your hair thicker, longer and shinier.

The expert advised you should be taking care of your scalp as well as your hair, as your scalp tends to get overlooked.

He said: "Making sure your scalp is healthy is just as important as your hair itself. To ensure your hair is at its thickest potential you need to check your scalp health.

"Doing head massages and oiling your scalp can really improve the thickness and density of your hair."

Alfie explained the things we should and should not be doing to our hair to make sure it remains healthy.

The expert continued: "To enhance the growth of your hair you need to take into consideration what you are doing to your hair daily and how you are treating it.

"Daily, we should not be applying heat to it as it could get damaged and if you do put heat on it always put heat protectant on beforehand.

"Regular trims are encouraged to ensure that the hair does not further split up the shaft which will ensure your hair grows thick and long."

To get the shiny approach, the senior hair stylist emphasised using products correctly to get the feel you want.

He said: "When we are taking shine into consideration, it’s all about the products going into your hair so if you are lacking shine you need products that will hydrate your hair and make it look a lot less dry.

"Choose things like a nourishing shampoo and conditioner, an oil to apply before brushing through your mid-lengths and ends and a hydrating hair mask once a week.

"The best way to wash your hair is by doing two really thorough shampoos. The first one is to get all the buildup off, and the second is to cleanse. Following that you want to squeeze all the moisture out of your hair to not dilute the conditioner and gently apply from ends to midlengths. Wash out and towel dry.

"Also after styling, shine spray really helps the light reflect off the hair to give a shiny look."

During the winter months, the expert talked about the importance of keeping your hair well-trimmed and looked after.

He advised: "I suggest keeping your hair trimmed and oiled. The seasonal change can also take a toll on the hydration of your hair. Keeping it hydrated is key."
