Hair care myths could be stopping you from achieving your best locks

It is often said that getting regular trims can speed up the growth of your hair, but this is not necessarily the case.

While it can help your hair look healthier, an expert explained it will not make your hair grow more quickly.

Anders Reckendorff from Scandinavian Biolabs explained that many hair care tips are outdated and do not do what people think they will.

Getting regular haircuts to grow longer locks is one of these myths, according to the expert.

He said: "Hair grows from the roots, not the ends. Regular trims prevent split ends, which can make hair look healthier, but they don't influence growth rate at all."

There is very little research to suggest regular trims (every four to six weeks) will supercharge the growth of your hair.

However, it can have other benefits. Cutting your hair removes split ends, which can weaken the hair shaft and make it look thinner and brittle.

Therefore, regular trims can help you retain length. For this reason, freshly trimmed hair will also often appear longer, as it will look thicker and retain length over time.

Another common hair debate is how often you should wash it to keep it looking its best, with many professionals advising against washing too often.

However, some people may need to wash their hair every day. It all depends on your hair type and the oiliness of your scalp, Anders continued.

He said: "One of the biggest myths is that washing your hair daily strips it of natural oils and damages your scalp.

"Your scalp produces sebum at different rates depending on your genetics, hormones and environment. Some people simply produce more oil than others."

When washing your hair, adding a gentle scalp massage can help to promote growth, according to one expert.

He said: "Gentle scalp massages can boost circulation and encourage growth. You can do this in the shower or while applying oil treatments."

For better results, he suggested using a shampoo that addresses specific needs and opting for a deep conditioning hair mask once a week.
