A weekly oiling routine may be one of the most nourishing practices for your hair
Ayurvedic traditions have become the backbone of modern beauty practices because of their ability to restore balance in skin and hair.
Among them is hair oiling, which many influencers tout as the best routine for conditioning the scalp.
Hair care enthusiast Tatyana Lafata has credited hair oiling for giving her the most luscious hair of her life in several online posts.
Taking to TikTok, she said: “These hair tips helped me grow my hair healthy and luscious. Now it’s completely natural no extensions, nothing.

“The number one thing that changed my hair was hair oiling. I do a whole oiling routine once a week before I wash my hair. I leave it in for a few hours.
“It has changed my hair, it made my hair grow, it made my hair stronger, it made my hair hydrated.
“I cannot stop raving about it, I post videos about it all the time, it’s my favourite thing ever.”
Tatyana combines Mielle Organic's rosemary oil with Golâb’s Strengthening Strength Massage Oil, running a brush through her roots beforehand to stimulate blood flow.
Once both oils are applied to the scalp, she runs the same bamboo brush through her hair to distribute the product.
The product is removed with shampoo a couple of hours later, revealing shiny and hydrated locks.
Dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal, MD, confirmed on the Cleveland Clinic's website that massaging natural oils through hair increases “shine, moisture and overall health”.
“This beauty routine has its roots in Ayurvedic medicine and Indian tradition, but has gained traction recently in the world of natural hair care.”
A body of research published in 2015 found that oils revive hair with a much-needed moisture boost.
Another study from 2021 confirmed that hair oiling with coconut oil strengthened the hair fibres.

“Especially for hair affected by intense styling and heat damage, hair oiling can fill in some gaps to keep it moisturised and, in turn, silky smooth,” explained Khetarpal.
While it's generally safe to leave oil in hair overnight, some say it's better to wash it out after 30 minutes.
Leaving the product in overnight can attract dirt and make it more difficult to wash out.
Individuals with naturally oily skin should also consider limiting how frequently they do oiling treatments.
