While washing our hair is something all of us do, an expert claimed that not everyone is getting it right.
The right shampoo and conditioner routine will leave your strands looking and feeling their best - think glossy, healthy and soft. However, the wrong methods can take your locks from luscious to lacklustre.
The founder and owner of hair salon Socoh Salon, Sophie Margetts, took to TikTok with some advice on how to wash your hair effectively.
Among other top tips, she stressed the importance of rinsing out your conditioner thoroughly to avoid greasy, rough strands.

Conditioner - which keeps the hair soft and moisturised when used correctly - should only be applied once you have removed excess moisture from your hair. This can be done by towel-drying your hair or using a towel to squeeze it.
Sophie said: "The more water you remove from your hair, the less diluted the conditioner is and the more moisture that soaks into your ends."
Apply conditioner to your mid-lengths and ends, then use your fingers or a comb to gently work the product through your hair - just ensure you leave it on for long enough.
Finish off by treating yourself to a quick head massage to stimulate blood circulation and growth, before rinsing your conditioner out thoroughly.
"If you leave any conditioner in your hair, you'll find that it's quite sticky and your hair doesn't feel soft or luscious when you blow dry it or leave it," the expert warned.
Indeed, the experts at GK Hair confirmed that leaving conditioner in too long can lead to product build-up, scalp irritation and grimy residue.
For beautiful strands, it's important to avoid a second conditioner mistake that causes hair loss and dandruff.
How to wash your hair like a pro
- Wet your hair thoroughly
- Add one pump of shampoo to your hands and rub them together to emulsify it
- Work the shampoo through your scalp - including the nape and crown - before scrubbing, then rinse thoroughly
- Shampoo and rinse again
- Use a towel to remove excess moisture from the hair or towel dry
- Apply the conditioner through your mid-lengths and ends, then work it through with your fingers or a comb
- Rinse the conditioner out thoroughly
Before conditioning your hair, shampoo is an absolute must.
Using a hair model to demonstrate the perfect routine, Sophie asked women: "Are you washing your hair properly?"

Rinse your conditioner out thoroughly for 'soft and luscious' hair

After this, add one pump of shampoo to your hands and emulsify it by rubbing your palms together. This essentially activates it.
Work the product through your scalp, ensuring you "get under your nape and at your crown".
According to the salon owner, "shampoo is for scrubbing the scalp", so avoid your mid-lengths and ends.
After working the shampoo into your hair, rinse it out - then repeat. Your second round of shampoo should be more "bubbly" because "you've already moved some oil". Once you've worked it into the scalp, rinse it out.
