If used consistently, the ingredient helps with hair growth

Many factors influence the thickness and fullness of hair, such as genetics and the amount of stress in a person's life.

Hair experts shared advice on achieving the best looking hair, starting with using the right ingredients.

Dermatologist at Stratum Clinics, Dr Adam Friedmann spoke exclusively to GB News on what women should apply to combat hair loss.

He said: "Minoxidil is a hair loss treatment and is most efficient for female pattern hair loss, technically called androgenetic alopecia."

Minoxidil prolongs the growing stage of the hair follicle cycle by "increasing the blood flow to the scalp".

Dr Friedmann explained: "It reduces the shedding stage, which effectively results in on average more and thicker hair over time.

"It can be applied to the scalp in the form of a spray, lotion and foam or can be taken orally."

The ingredient works all over the hair, but "better results are achieved at the crown and the top of the head."

Another dermatologist, Dr Shereene Idriss, discussed on YouTube how minoxidil increases the growth phase of your hair.

She said: "In the antigen phase... your hair stays on your head longer and appears thicker and fuller. In terms of how to use it, you have to be consistent. The second that you stop, it will fall off.

"You need to use it every day because if not, it will not work that well long-term. It takes months to see results because initially, you are going to have a shedding phase which can be quite distressing."

After the shedding phase, the hair will grow back, taking "anywhere from three to six months of consistent usage to see results".

A study published in the National Library of Medicine concluded: "Minoxidil is a common medication prescribed for treating hair loss-related problems. It provides remarkable benefits to patients with hair disorders."

Another expert spoke exclusively to GB News on supplements for combatting hair loss.

The pharmacist recommended having biotin, vitamin D, iron, and B vitamin supplements, alongside a healthy diet.

They said: "These may help prevent hair thinning and vitamins can help to prevent hair loss that is caused by a bad diet."
