Regularly washing your hair is important to remove dirt and oils, and to leave it looking shiny and fresh.
However, doing this too often can lead to a "dry scalp, flaking and thinner hair".
With so much conflicting advice available, how do you know when to wash your hair? Hair expert Giovanny Jorge, from Hair Repair Bar by Gioje, shared a useful tip.
He said: "The general rule for hair washing is to do it whenever your hair feels oily to the touch. For some, that may be after a week. For others, it may be every few days." Washing your hair correctly can lead to thicker-looking locks.
Washing your hair every day is not usually necessary
GETTYThe hair pro explained you must wash your mane when it feels oily or if there is a buildup of product in it. However, sometimes your barnet may need a refresh before it is oily.
For that, Giovanny suggested wetting your hair without shampoo. The expert explained: "If your hair feels and looks dry before it feels oily, I recommend conditioning without shampoo to keep the hair moisturised without over-stripping the hair’s natural oils.
"Washing every day actually overstimulates oil (sebum) production which can lead to dry scalp, flaking, and the appearance of thinner hair."
Some amount of natural oils is good for the hair, which is why it is important not to overwash. Doing so can also make your hair look thin and flat.
If you feel the need to wash your hair particularly quickly, Giovanny said this could be time to look at the products you are using.
He added: "I would recommend changing your shampoo or conditioner if you still feel that your hair is oily to the touch on a daily basis, even after washing."
Picking the right shampoo can be a daunting task, with so many varieties on the market. Women are often warned to avoid sulphates, but hair expert Nicole Petty shared why this might not be necessary.

It may be worth using conditioner without shampoo, according to the expert

"Some of the most demonised ingredients can work wonders when used in the right context.
"While you shouldn’t be using sulphates on a daily basis, some hair types can actually benefit from the deeper cleanse that sulphates provide, especially oilier hair types or those that experience a lot of product buildup.
"Those with fine hair may also prefer shampoos containing sulphates, as they’re less likely to weigh the hair down with heavier ingredients."
