A doctor shared exactly when you should wash your hair

There is much debate over how often you should wash your hair, but most people will do this task when it looks greasy or there is a noticeable build-up of product.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, an expert shared that it is vital to "strike a balance" when washing.

Leading hair surgeon at Elithair Dr Bawli explained washing your hair every day can seem appealing, but is not advisable.

He said: "Whilst it is tempting to wash your hair as soon as it feels dirty, it is important to strike a balance between cleaning your scalp to avoid any dirt or product build-up, and not stripping your hair of its natural oils.

"Therefore, you should not wash your hair any more than two to three times a week."

Washing your hair regularly can indeed affect the natural oils of your hair and leave your locks looking lacklustre over time.

The doctor continued: "Washing your hair too often can strip away natural oils and moisture, leading to dryness and dullness, while washing it too infrequently can result in buildup and a lack of shine."

There are some instances where daily washing is ok, but that will really depend on hair type, humidity and activity level.

In general, this should be avoided. For those who notice their hair gets greasy quickly, the expert suggested regularly using a clarifying shampoo, as this cleans the scalp more deeply.

He said: "Try using a clarifying shampoo once every couple of weeks to allow a more thorough clean of the scalp.

"This will allow you to go longer between washes if you generally find you want to wash your hair more often than two to three times a week."

Washing your hair without shampoo could also be one way to freshen up without stripping your mane.

Dr Bawli added: "If you want to wash your hair more than that, try rinsing the hair without using shampoo to help freshen it up without overwashing.

"Shampooing the hair too often can dry out the hair, causing breakage, increased split ends and hair loss."

In other hair news, an expert shared the "biggest mistake" women make when trying to grow thicker locks.

A hair expert has also recommended two types of shampoo and conditioner to combat female hair loss.
