Rose shrubs will thrive with a little help from homemade remedies, an expert has claimed

Plants reach the peak of their growing cycle in June, but without additional care, flowers may wilt under the summer heat.

To prevent this, experts recommend adjusting watering and pruning routines, and taking necessary precautions against plant pests.

According to gardening enthusiasts at Ladybird Plantcare, various pests thrive in June.

Aphids are among the most problematic species at this time of the year, wreaking havoc in containers and borders.

Fortunately, Elise Harlock, the brand manager at Prestige Flowers, claims you may already have all the ingredients you need to control this issue.

“Roses are susceptible to pests like aphids and spider mites, which can diminish their beauty,” she explained.

“A quick and easy solution is to mix a few drops of Fairy Liquid in a spray bottle filled with water.

“Spray this mixture directly on the affected areas once a week to keep pests at bay. It’s a gentle yet effective method that won’t harm your roses.”

While the gardener insists that the solution is risk-free, some experts argue that it can cause damage by dissolving the waxy layer on the surface of foliage.

What's more, experts at the Royal Horticultural Society state that roses can withstand several species of aphids in the spring and summer, the most common being Macrosiphum rosae.

How to feed roses

Because roses are heavy feeders, they need a consistent supply of nutrients to thrive.

“You can also use banana peels,” said Elise. “They’re rich in potassium, which supports blooming. Just chop them up and bury them around the base of your rose bushes.”

Hydration is also crucial to help roses reach their full potential, the expert explained, adding that they should be watered once a week.

“Ensure your roses receive deep watering once a week, especially during dry periods,” Elise said.

“Using a soaker hose is a great way to deliver water directly to the roots without wasting a drop.”

Another fantastic but overlooked tool for rose care is Epsom salt, which prevents a magnesium deficiency in the plants.

“It provides magnesium, which is essential for photosynthesis and overall plant health,” the expert explained.

“Dissolve a tablespoon of Epsom salt in a gallon of water and spray your roses monthly. This will enhance their colour and vitality.”
