The hack may be key for keeping poinsettias looking fresh and vibrant throughout the season

A 9p vodka hack could keep your Christmas poinsettias looking fresh and vibrant throughout the festive season.

Elise Harlock, brand manager at Prestige Flowers, says this unusual yet effective method can significantly extend the life of these seasonal plants.

"Vodka works by slowing down the production of ethylene, a natural plant hormone responsible for ageing," explained Harlock.

The alcohol-water solution helps prevent premature leaf drop by reducing ethylene's effects on the plant.

"This simple hack isn't just about aesthetics - it also makes caring for poinsettias easier during the busy holiday season," she added.

To try this money-saving hack, mix one teaspoon of vodka with two pints of water, using the solution once weekly.

The treatment costs just 9p per application, with vodka available from Tesco for £17 per litre.

"The ratio is important," Harlock warns. "Too much vodka can stress the plant, so a little goes a long way."

Proper plant care is essential alongside the vodka treatment, according to Harlock.

"Poinsettias love bright, indirect light and should be kept in a room with stable temperatures between 18°C and 24C," she advised.

It is also important to keep the plants away from drafts, heaters, and areas with temperature fluctuations, as these can cause stress and leaf drop.

For optimal maintenance, Harlock recommended letting the soil dry slightly between waterings to prevent overwatering issues.

Regular rotation of the plant ensures all sides receive even light exposure, helping maintain its shape and vibrant appearance.

Any fallen leaves should be promptly trimmed away, directing the plant's energy towards its healthy parts.

It comes as another houseplant aficionado discussed how to control lighting conditions and encourage more growth as the days get shorter.

The creator of the TikTok @plantcarefamily suggests using a timer to stay in control of just how much light plants receive throughout the day.
