Orchid care: 'Ideal' place to keep the plants in your home or risk 'scorching the leaves'

Orchids are popular houseplants that can really elevate your home decor, but how you care for them is important for their survival, gardening expert and PlantWhisperer senior editor Victoria Cummins said.

For optimal growth, place orchids in carefully selected locations with appropriate light exposure.

The expert said: "Orchids love bright, indirect light. An east- or west-facing windowsill is ideal - just protect them from harsh direct sun that can scorch the leaves."

Ensuring they are in an area with the right humidity is also crucial for indoor orchids to flourish.

The expert recommended: "To boost humidity, mist the foliage with room temperature water every few days, but avoid getting the flowers wet."

Similarly, make sure your plant has enough water, while being mindful not to overwater, Victoria added.

She added: "To keep your orchids thriving in planters or pots indoors, aim to water them about once a week. A good trick is to lift the pot and check if it feels heavy before adding more water.

"For moth orchids specifically, look for the roots to turn silvery as a sign they need a drink."

Additionally, temperature control plays a crucial role in orchid care. The expert advised: "Most orchids prefer temperatures between 60°F to 80°F (around 15°C to 26°C), with cooler nights."

Proper potting technique is another essential factor for success. "Make sure to use a well-draining orchid potting mix in your planters," the expert explained.

"Interestingly, orchids often do best when they're a bit root-bound, so avoid overpotting."

Regular feeding is vital during the growing season. The plant pro added: "During the growing season from spring through autumn, feed monthly with an orchid fertiliser diluted to half strength.

"Maintaining orchids for the long term requires attention to their blooming cycles.

"After a blooming cycle finishes, usually every two to three years, refresh your planter by gently removing the old potting mix and repotting the orchid."
