It is crucial to leave plants near the right windows this month to ensure adequate daylight exposure

While winter demands thorough preparation for orchid growing, the shorter days can prompt the development of new buds in certain species.

But with less control over temperatures, it's important to take extra measures to keep the plants in good nick.

Orchids Info listed three essential ways plant owners can keep orchids healthy in a clip titled "3 simple tips for orchid care in winter months to keep your orchid happy, healthy and beautiful!".

The first tip is placing the plants near windows to ensure adequate daylight exposure.

The channel also highlighted a simple method for checking if orchids need watering, explaining that "grey means yes, green means no".

The channel detailed a specific watering technique for orchid care, suggesting that owners remove the plant from its decorative pot and place it in a water-filled container for five to 10 minutes.

“Take it out, let it drain and place it back in the decorative pot," they advised. "Preferably do this once a week.”

This hack allows the orchid to properly absorb water through its roots.

After soaking, the plant should be allowed to drain before being returned to its decorative container.

This watering routine should ideally be performed once per week. It comes as Nicole Denanna, a New York-based gardener, has shared additional winter care advice for orchid owners.

She emphasised the importance of light management during shorter winter days.

"Here in New York, the sun is going down around 4:30pm you have to supplement with additional light if you want to keep your orchids growing," she advised.

For those with south-facing windows, Denanna recommended keeping plants out of direct sunlight whilst ensuring they receive enough light.

She also stressed the importance of keeping orchids away from areas with harsh temperatures.
