Monty Don says now is the 'perfect time' to do key gardening job - 'don't get complacent'

As temperatures cool, it is time for gardeners to get a head start on next year.

This can be done by thinking of what can be planted now, such as tulips and trees.

"November is a very good month for planting trees, shrubs, hedges and perennials," Monty said.

"It is also the perfect time for planting tulips both in pots and in the ground."

He warned gardeners should not get "complacent" with their outdoor space.

As the days get shorter and colder, Britons should think of how they can protect what they have in their garden.

This includes putting precautions in place for "any kind of extreme weather".

The gardening expert, who has more than 30 years of experience, described this as "gradually putting the garden to bed".

Looking after outdoor furniture and garden machinery should not be forgotten and is one thing that should also be considered now.

"Tender plants are protected, leafy perennials cut back, furniture brought in ready for repair and repainting, garden machinery checked over and serviced and the horticultural hatches battened down," he wrote in his blog.

It is important to keep on top of gardening jobs throughout the year.

A gardening expert explained there are many mistakes that Britons make that could be damaging to their outdoor space, with some of these in line with Monty's advice.

A study by Toolstation looked at the biggest mistakes that are made in the garden based on what landscapers considered a problem.

Planting a tree or plant that grows too big was found to be the most damaging mistake.

This was followed by not maintaining the lawn property and not upkeeping the garden in general.

As Monty suggested, planting plants or vegetables in the wrong season was also found to be one of the most detrimental mistakes.

Gardening and landscape expert Fiona Jenkins explained: "One of the most common gardening mistakes is planting a tree or hedge in the wrong location.

"It then grows too big and causes problems for you and potentially for your neighbours.

"Fast growing hedges can quickly become unmanageable, which can block natural light from your or your neighbour's property.

"Choose a slow growing variety so you can maintain it at a reasonable height."
