Weeds are a constant issue for gardeners

Weeds are a common enemy in people's gardens, as they serve as a breeding ground for pests and diseases, and create unnecessary competition among plants.

A gardener has shared two methods he uses to remove weeds: one that involves chemicals and another that does not.

An expert, known as Novice Gardener on YouTube, explained the damage that weed grasses can cause if left unaddressed.

He said: "They will take any opportunity to germinate, and sometimes you will find them growing in the most bizarre places. For example, I found them growing in the trim of my garage door.

"This is because of their root system. They have very shallow roots, so they can thrive in nearly any environment. Weed seeds, if they blow into your lawn or are already in the soil, will take that opportunity to germinate and find a way to bed themselves in."

By using a chemical ingredient designed to target weeds with a mixture of water, people can "remove weed grasses completely from your lawn".

The expert said: "I mix it in a four-to-one ratio with water and will use a very small paintbrush to paint the smallest dots on the weed grass plant with the mixture.

"It will completely kill the plant. It'll kill the leaf and root system, which is really beneficial as it destroys everything that has to do with the plant."

The only downside to using a chemical product is "that you will have some ugly yellow patches" on your lawn for at least a few weeks.

If you do not want to use chemical products, the gardener recommended using "the fork method".

He explained: "You can use a fork like a rake to rake up weeds around the outside.

"Grab the main bulk of the leaves before you pull them out by hand. You can use the fork to get under the plant because weed grasses have fairly shallow roots, so it is easy to remove."

The downside of this method is that the holes dug up will create "a lot of unsightly spaces".

The YouTuber noted: "From a distance, it is not too bad, but if you get over the top of the lawn, it looks a bit unsightly."

The gardener recommended overseeding the spaces to cover up the bare spots or letting the spaces replenish themselves naturally.

Another expert has shared five plants they recommend for Britons to add colour to their garden.
