People may think they are helping their plant but they could be damaging it
In the winter, our houseplants require less water as most slow down their growth due to the shorter days.
According to an expert from the YouTube channel, MonstroFarm, over-watering your products is the "number one killer of houseplants in the winter".
The expert provided tips for people to avoid committing this easy-to-make mistake and advised the best methods to get the most out of your houseplants.
They said: "Always check the soil first before watering. Water them until they are fully saturated and water again until they get to just about the lowest threshold of water for that particular plant."
The content creator emphasised the importance of checking your plants to make sure you recognise any problems early.
They said: "Professional growers monitor their plants. They are diligent in observing their plants for any signs of stress, pests or disease. They routinely inspect leaves, stems and roots to identify any issues early on. You can adopt this practice by routinely examining your plants.
"Check for stress, discolouration, unusual growth patterns or pest infestations so that you can be consistent. The best time to do this is when you are watering your plants. It is great because we are hands-on looking at our plants.
"Take your time, think of it as mediation and flip the leave over looking for pests and if you can pop the plant out of the post or use a transparent pot and look at the roots. By identifying these problems early on, you can take prompt action to address them and keep your plants healthy and thriving."
Another tip the expert provided was knowing the specific water requirements for each of our plants, which is paramount during the winter months.
The YouTuber said: "The pros understand the proper watering techniques for each plant variety. They pay attention to the individual plant needs, considering factors such as potting mix and drainage.
"We can follow suit by learning the specific water requirements of our plants and adjusting our watering routines accordingly.
"It is essential to water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain and avoid both overwatering and underwatering which is the number one plant killer. The best growers I know do not water on a schedule but rather when the plant needs it and if we want our plants to thrive, we should do the same."
