ZZ plants, snake plants, and pothos are all excellent houseplants to have during the winter

In the midst of the colder and chillier months, looking after your plants can become a tricky task and you have to set up the ideal conditions for them to thrive.

A gardener, from the YouTube channel SoCal Plant King shared four different houseplants that thrive in winter conditions where they require very little light.

The content creator said: "These are plants that thrive in low light conditions and are super easy to care for but there's a big difference between no light and low light.

"No light means complete darkness, like a closet with the door shut. Realistically, no plant is going to be able to survive those kinds of conditions. Low light on the other hand is indirect light or dim space like a room with just a small window and that's where these plants shine."

The first plant the YouTuber recommended is the snake plant because it does not need a lot of attention and is easy to look after.

He said: "The snake plant is one tough cookie, it'll survive in low light conditions and it only needs water every four to six weeks. It has thick leaves and super thick roots and that's where it stores all of its water. That's what really makes it drought-tolerant."

The gardener also recommended cast iron plants for their similar requirements.

"The cast iron plant originates from shaded forests of China and Japan, so it is definitely used to low light conditions. Just by its name, you know it is going to be a survivor. You are not going to have any problems if you happen to forget watering it and again this plant thrives on neglect," said the YouTuber.

For those with ambitions of a less common houseplant, the gardener recommended the ZZ plant, also known as the Zanzibar gem.

The ZZ plant comes in two different versions, one green and one that is a bit darker, which is known as the black raven ZZ.

The gardener said: "The black raven ZZ is one of my favourite houseplants ever because the foliage is so dark, it's so appealing. It definitely makes for a good house decoration.

"It has thick leaves and a thick stem. You can basically let this plant dry all the way out and it will still be thriving."

The fourth plant the gardener recommended is the pothos which requires a little bit more attention than the rest of the plants mentioned.

The gardener explained: "The pothos is a trailing plant and comes in quite a few different versions. If you give it something to climb, the leaves will get massive.

"This plant is not as drought tolerant as something like a ZZ plant. If you happen to see that the leaves look a little sad and droopy, that's a good time to go ahead and fully soak all that soil."

The pothos is an excellent plant for decor and is commonly placed by the windowsill to provide some vibrance to the room.
