People have been advised to start sewing seeds and make sure their roses are pruned

As the spring months are on the horizon, gardeners need to get ready to have their plants all set to grow with the warmer weather arriving.

Eve, from the YouTube channel British Garden Centres, has shared three tasks she advised to do before it is too late.

Eve said: "Spring is just around the corner and gardens are starting to show signs of new life.

"February is a great time to start planning your summer garden and choosing the bulbs you would like to fill it with."

She told individuals to go and pick out flower bulbs they would like to grow for the upcoming spring.

"People can pick from dahlias, gladioli, begonias and lilies," explained the gardener who said a garden with a variety of plants always looks great.

Despite this variety, roses remain an established favourite with gardeners and Eve encouraged them to make sure they have them pruned.

She said: "Prune your roses while they are still dormant. Using a good pair of secateurs, cut a rose back by half as long as it is well-established and been in the ground for a while."

With roses being a tough plant people should not worry exactly where they cut them, even if they incidentally cut them further than halfway.

The gardener explained: "Once you have cut it back so the stems are all roughly the same height, then take out any dead, dying, damaged or diseased stems.

"If you have any remaining leaves on your rose, clear these away too. Once you are happy with your rose, you must dispose of your cuttings in your garden waist instead of composting them as they can harbour diseases."

Once the roses are pruned back, gardeners should hopefully see signs of growth already starting to form.

The third task people should undertake this week is sewing seeds, paying close attention to sewing sweet peas.

She explained: "February is the perfect month to sow sweet peas so that you have beautiful fragrant blooms come summertime. I sow mine in some deep-rooted trainers and fill them with peep-free sea compost.

"First, add water to the compost so it expands. After five minutes you should have fluffy seed compost. Then fill your root trainers with the compost, pop it together and add more till they are a couple of centimetres full from the top."

The gardener adds two seeds into the cell so that when they have germinated, she can remove the weaker seeds. Individuals can cover them up by using soil or vermiculite.

Eve said: "You can add a label to your plant, give them water and leave them on a shelf in a greenhouse where it's nice and cold but still really sunny."

Whilst preparing the garden, it is important to know how to protect it to make sure no unwanted animals enter.
