GB News is sharing how to get the most out of your garden every week. Right now, it is all about preparation

There is less that needs done in the garden in winter, but failing to prepare can make the rest of the year more difficult.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, experts have shared the preparation jobs you should be doing in February.

Think pruning, cleaning and sowing certain seeds, plant expert Tammy Sons explained. She said: "The garden stays quiet during February, yet this is my preferred time to prepare before spring’s busy season begins.

"The current period offers an ideal opportunity to prune dormant trees and shrubs, including fruit trees, roses, and ornamental grasses."

CEO of LawnStarter Ryan Farley agreed with this. He added: "February is a great time to prune any plants that prefer to be pruned in late winter or very early spring. These tasks can help your plants get a jump on growth for the coming spring season."

Both experts discussed the importance of clearing the garden of any debris, ahead of the warmer months.

Tammy said: "Cleaning garden beds has become my priority since I remove leftover debris and weeds that might serve as shelter for pests.

"I enhance soil fertility by incorporating compost whenever the ground remains unfrozen. I begin sowing seeds of hardy perennials and cool-season vegetables inside my home to produce robust transplants ready for early spring planting."

For Ryan, clearing should take priority in February. This is key when preparing your lawn, in particular. He said: "February is the time of year when I’ll recommend beginning to prepare your garden for spring.

"These tasks can include things like raking out your garden beds of loose debris or anything that may have fallen in there over the winter, and I’d also recommend removing snow from your garden plants to help any early-budding plants.

"When it comes to lawn care, the first February task I recommend is clearing any residual snowfall off of grass. This is the time of year when you’ll want to begin clearing snow off of your lawn if it’s lingering for more than a day or two.

"The extra moisture is nice, but as your grass starts to come out of dormancy, you’ll want it to be as clear of debris and heavy snow as possible."

Mulching is also a job to consider doing before the end of the month. Tammy added: "Applying mulch to perennial plants creates insulation against late frost damage and blocks weed growth before it starts to appear.

"My routine includes inspecting overwintering plants to ensure they maintain adequate moisture and remain disease-free.

"I build the groundwork for my upcoming successful garden season in February because it feels like the final winter phase."
