Britons are urged not the eat the affected foods

Sweets and cheese are often given as gifts at Christmas, but Britons should be careful with some foods they have bought or received this week.

Sweets sold in Tesco and Sainsbury's have been recalled due to a health risk.

The Natural Confectionery Co. Jelly Snakes

Mondelez International has warned customers of several batches of The Natural Confectionery Co. Jelly Snakes as they contain undeclared gluten.

This is the result of a packaging error but could have serious health consequences for anyone with an allergy or intolerance.

Symptoms of a gluten allergy vary but can include vomiting, hives, headaches or trouble breathing.

Cheese

This follows a warning shared this week as six types of cheese were recalled as a precaution because of the possible contamination with E. Coli.

This can cause symptoms such as vomiting and fever.

Cheeses by Route des Terroirs and Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire Cheese Ltd were recalled.

The FSA states: "Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire Cheese Ltd has taken the precautionary step of recalling various Lancashire Cheese products because the products might contain E. Coli. The cheeses are sometimes sold as a full block or served as individual portions, it may have been provided as part of a hamper you've purchased or been gifted.

"In some cases it’s been sold as part of a charcuterie grazing platter. It may not always be clear whether you have purchased an affected product.

"If in doubt, consumers are advised to contact the retailer they bought their cheese from to find out if the cheese they have purchased is from the businesses and batches affected and, in the meantime, to not eat the product and ensure it is stored safely, fully wrapped and not in contact with other foods."

It added: "Route des Terroirs is recalling Morbier Maison Monts & Terroirs Chalet De Vevy Raw Cows’ Milk Cheese because Shiga toxin-producing E. Coli has been found in some batches of this product."
