Loyal fans were quick to spot the staple meal missing from shelves

Tesco has discontinued its popular own-brand tomato and basil soup from its chilled range, dealing a blow to loyal customers.

The removal of the lunchtime favourite has sparked frustration among shoppers, who were quick to notice it missing from shelves.

The supermarket giant confirmed the change as part of its seasonal adjustments to its soup offerings.

The soup featured a smooth tomato blend finished with basil and a hint of black pepper.

Tesco has now removed the product from its website. It is also no longer available in stores, confirming a complete discontinuation from the current chilled range.

Customers have taken to social media to express their disappointment.

One shopper wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "Trying to find this soup... has it been discontinued?"

Another lamented: "Went into big Tesco to get my favourite tomato & basil soup for dinner, but it was out of stock. Evening ruined."

Tesco has stated that it adjusts its soup range throughout the year to reflect seasonal demand.

The supermarket has confirmed it will expand its soup offering again in the autumn.

However, even if the removal proves to be temporary, it has already left some loyal fans disappointed.

Shoppers seeking alternatives can find similar products at other supermarkets. Sainsbury's offers a tomato and basil soup with a 600g tub priced at £1.49.

M&S also stocks the flavour, with their 600g option available for £2.50. These alternatives may provide some consolation for disappointed Tesco customers.

Supermarkets regularly review their ranges and cut products to make space for new items.

Tesco isn't the only retailer discontinuing popular items; Aldi also recently dropped certain pork sausage products in a blow to shoppers.

The budget supermarket discontinued its popular 160g packs of Deli-Smoked Pork Sausage and Deli-Smoked Reduced-Fat Pork Sausage from approximately 100 stores across the UK.

The axing stirred uproar among customers.

There is hope for fans of the discontinued soup, as items sometimes make a return to supermarket shelves.
