Waitrose added: "We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused."
Point-of-sale notices will be displayed in stores where the product was sold.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) also issued a warning regarding the recall.
Britons were told: "Waitrose & Partners is recalling No1 Pesto alla Genovese because Salmonella has been found in the product.
"Symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps. If you have bought the above product do not eat it."
The FSA explained why food recalls sometimes occur. The Government department said: "If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).
"The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.
