Allergy UK provides information on fish and shellfish allergies: "A fish/shellfish allergic reaction occurs when the body recognises the food protein as harmful and mounts an allergic response.

"An allergic reaction to seafood can be mild or moderate (swollen lips, face or eyes, itching, tingling mouth, hives, rash, abdominal pain, vomiting) or severe (breathing difficulties, dizziness or collapse).

"Fish/shellfish reactions have the potential to cause anaphylaxis, which is the most severe form of an allergic reaction."

"Mild to moderate symptoms include hives (rash), tingling mouth, swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat, itching, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.

"Severe symptoms include difficult or noisy breathing, wheezing, a persistent cough, chest tightness, a hoarse voice and difficulty swallowing.

"Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. It should always be treated as a medical emergency.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

"Symptoms need to be recognised early, and treated quickly with the medicine ‘adrenaline’. An ambulance should always be called for a person having anaphylaxis and the operator informed that it is anaphylaxis."

The FSA explained why food products are sometimes recalled. Product recalls should be taken seriously to ensure your safety.

Britons were told: "Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold.

"Then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

"Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk. When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert."
