The Food Standards Agency has identified 12 spice products that could be harmful

A recall has been issued for several spices that pose a health risk to consumers with a food allergen.

Damasgate Wholesale is recalling Sofra Garlic Powder as it contains peanuts, which are not mentioned on the label.

As a result, 12 products have been pulled from sale. Those who suffer from a peanut allergy and already have the products at home must not eat them.

Allergy UK explained that while most reactions to a peanut allergy are "mild", they can also be "moderate or severe". Anaphylaxis, the most severe form of allergic reaction, can be "life-threatening".

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) urged shoppers who have a peanut allergy "not to eat" the products.

Instead, the Government department encouraged them to return the products to where they were bought for a full refund.

For more information, customers can contact 02085758800 or info@damasgate.uk.com.

Britons were given specific instructions in Damasgate Wholesale's official recall notice.

They were told: "Check if you have bought any of the affected Lot Numbers listed above of the Sofra Garlic Powder 100g.

"You can do this by taking a picture of this notice or writing down the Lot Numbers and Best Before End listed above for reference at home.

"Return the product(s) to the store for a full refund (with or without a receipt)."

Symptoms of a peanut allergy

Allergy UK warned: "Signs and symptoms usually occur within minutes of contact with peanuts, but can also occur up to one hour later. Most allergic reactions are mild but they can also be moderate or severe.

"Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction which can be life-threatening.

"Mild to moderate symptoms include an itchy mouth, tongue and throat; swelling of lips, around the eyes or face; red raised itchy rash (often called nettle rash, hives or urticaria); vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea; and runny nose and sneezing.

"Any one or more of the following symptoms are a sign of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) and should be treated as a medical emergency. If available, adrenaline should be given without delay and an ambulance called with the call operator informed that it is anaphylaxis.

"Severe symptoms of anaphylaxis include: swelling of the tongue and/or throat; difficulty in swallowing or speaking; change in voice (hoarse voice); wheeze (whistling noise) or persistent cough; difficult or noisy breathing; dizziness, collapse, loss of consciousness (due to a drop in blood pressure); and pale, floppy, sudden sleepiness in babies."

For more information on peanut allergies, Britons can consult Allergy UK.

Allergy alerts must be taken seriously to ensure customer safety. The FSA explained: "Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold. Then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

"Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk. When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert."
