The FSA told affected customers: "The products may contain small pieces of metal, which makes them unsafe to eat.

"Johnston Mooney & O'Brien is recalling the above products. Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products.

"These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products."

The notice from Johnston Mooney & O'Brien read: "As a precaution, Brennans are recalling the products listed above with a best before date of July 21 because there is a very small risk that some packs may contain small pieces of metal.

"Please do not eat this product. Return it to the store for a full refund or send the empty packaging with your name and address for a full refund to Brennans Bakeries, Greenhills Industrial Estate, Dublin 12.

"No other products are affected by this issue. Brennans apologises for the inconvenience this may cause and assures customers of our continued commitment to the highest standard of product quality and safety."

The FSA said: "If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

"The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.

"In some cases, a 'Food Alert for Action' is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers."

This comes as snacks that can cause hives, vomiting and more are pulled from shelves for the safety of customers.

Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and more have also issued food and product recalls over customer safety risks.
