Fan favourites including Côtes du Rhone, Rioja Reserva and Atlantique Rosé face a packaging change

Aldi has become the first UK supermarket to remove protective sleeves over corks from its own-label wines.

The change will see the removal of the protective sleeves over corks on 46 of Aldi’s wine lines.

This includes "shopper favourites" such as Côtes du Rhone, Rioja Reserva and Atlantique Rosé.

The move, which will reduce aluminium and plastic use, represents a significant step in reducing unnecessary packaging across the retail sector.

Following a successful trial in stores since March 2024, Aldi will now roll out this packaging change more widely.

The initiative has already proven effective during the year-long testing phase.

By the end of 2025, all own-labelled corked wines will have their protective sleeves removed.

National sustainability director at Aldi UK Luke Emery commented: "We know that sustainability is a priority for our customers, and we're always looking for new ways to reduce packaging and offer more sustainable choices.

"Launching wines with naked corks is a step in the right direction, and we're proud to be the first supermarket to introduce this change across our entire range of own-brand quality corked wines."

Earlier this year, Aldi made another sustainable move with its own-label Chardonnay in partnership with The Hidden Sea.

This collaboration means that for every bottle of Kooliburra Hidden Sea Chardonnay bought by Aldi customers, the equivalent of 10 plastic bottles worth of ocean plastic will be removed.

In similar supermarket news, M&S has announced a major change to its fruit packaging.

Over the coming weeks, shoppers will notice that avocados are packaged in cardboard in a bid to eliminate seven million units of plastic.

The new cardboard packaging will feature attractive designs whilst maintaining the same quality fruit.

Aldi has more exciting news for shoppers with the launch of a pillow that "can help and improve any sleep".

Available for £13, the CBD-infused pillow will be available while stocks last, in stores from March 9.
