A doctor spoke exclusively to GB News about the ingredients to incorporate into your skin care routine

An evening skin care routine should focus on repairing and recovering skin from the damage it has suffered during the day.

Using the right products and ingredients is crucial for getting the most out of an evening routine.

Dr Sheila Li spoke exclusively to GB News about the ingredients to include in an evening skin care routine and how to apply them.

Before applying, though, Dr Li advised: "Always start with a double cleanse to make sure all makeup, suncream, and impurities are removed."

The skin care expert recommended incorporating retinoids, such as retinols, into your routine.

She said: "They are known for speeding up cell turnover, which not only helps improve skin texture but also stimulates collagen production."

A study published in the National Library of Medicine supported the doctor's position and outlined the benefits of retinoids.

It stated: "Retinoids have demonstrated promise in enhancing skin texture, diminishing fine lines, and augmenting the thickness of both the epidermal and dermal layers."

Within your routine, focus on using hydrating products consistently to prevent collagen breakdown, which "naturally declines by about one to 1.5 per cent each year".

The skin care expert suggested: "[Keep your] skin well-moisturised as it can better support collagen structures and retain its youthful appearance.

"Look for moisturisers that include hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides."

The ingredients are crucial for "maintaining skin elasticity and supporting collagen health overnight".

The expert recommended incorporating "antioxidants, exfoliants and moisture boosters" into your routine, with ingredients like vitamin C.

She explained: "Vitamin C is crucial in the morning due to its antioxidant properties, which protect the skin from environmental stressors, such as pollution and UV exposure, both of which can accelerate collagen breakdown."

Another study published in the National Library of Medicine explained how vitamin C also benefits collagen in the skin.

It noted: "Skin fibroblasts have an absolute dependence on vitamin C for the synthesis of collagen and for the regulation of the collagen/elastin balance in the dermis."
