Thousands of shoppers caught out as Easter eggs run out across Britain amid claims the Christian festival is being 'wilfully dumped'

Easter eggs have run out across the country sparking panic with last-minute shoppers reporting there are "none left anywhere".

Several major supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons have seen shelves wiped clean with no stock left to replenish supplies.

It led to reports on social media of 'egg fights' with shoppers skirmishing in some stores to secure the last ones before Easter Day tomorrow.

Other shoppers complained that only 'evil' eggs - with bizarre fruit flavours - were now left on the shelves.

One furious shopper complained: "I went to Asda yesterday and they had no Easter eggs whatsoever.

"Sainsbury's and Co-op didn’t today! Nothing except hot cross buns to show it was even Easter weekend! I’m gutted."

Others complained they couldn't even get their hands on Cadbury's Mini Eggs while parents hoping to organise Easter egg hunts for children were left disappointed.

In Kettering, shoppers 'walked out' of Tesco Extra after finding there were no eggs while at one of the chain's Chelmsford stores, staff told shoppers they had been "wiped out" by a sudden surge in demand in recent days, with no more stock being delivered.

Another customer, at the Tesco store in Tring, Hertfordshire, said "not a single egg" was available, with staff seemingly bewildered that people had left it until Easter before buying eggs.

Others blamed the shortage on supermarkets 'scaling back' on the Christian festival.

Historian Catherine Pepinster told The Telegraph: "Easter is not just being forgotten, but wilfully dumped.

"It is now almost entirely a spring festival, with a nod to chocoholics.

"Waitrose and Sainsbury’s are offering egg hunt baskets this year with no mention of Easter.

"Easter eggs – eggs being symbols of the Resurrection – have been junked by some shops and replaced with chocolate rockets, “24 carat” chocolate carrots, cavapoo-type chocolate dogs and – a particular favourite alternative to Easter – dinosaurs.

"In my neighbourhood the dinosaur theme is dominant. Shops which previously had images of daffodils, Easter bunnies and Easter eggs in their windows now have dinosaurs and their eggs."

She added: "This antipathy to Easter runs counter to the way other faiths are treated.

"Supermarkets worked out some years ago that, if you provide people of different faiths with lots of speciality foods they like to eat for their big celebrations, it not only indicates you’re a tolerant up-to-date business but that it makes commercial sense to do so too."

The shortage comes after Tesco was slammed for selling eggs four months early.

The supermarket giant started stocking them - at a discount - as early as December, a time when there was a shortage of actual eggs - with chocolate ones sometimes being put on shelves in their place.

The MP for Ealing Central and Acton, Rupa Huq Tweeted on December 30 2022: “It’s still definitely December and well within the 12 Days Of Christmas but Tesco Ealing Broadway shelves full of Easter eggs and bunnies as far as the eye can see?!”

At the time Tesco claimed Easter eggs were rolled out in December due to 'customer demand'.

A spokesman said: “It’s a few weeks until customers are able to choose from our full range of Easter products.

“However, we know some of our customers like to buy their eggs early, so we have started selling a small selection in some of our stores.”
