A condiment can slow carbohydrate absorption and make weight loss more achievable, according to a doctor

Good nutrition is vital when losing weight, and a doctor shared how certain foods can act as "natural carb blockers", ultimately leading to weight loss.

Drinking diluted vinegar before a meal can make you less likely to overeat.

Professor Franklin Joseph of Dr Frank's Weight Loss Clinic explained mixing vinegar with water can have a carb-blocking effect due to its acetic acid.

He explained this helps to slow digestion and reduce the glycemic impact of high-carb foods.

The expert said: "Drinking a tablespoon of diluted vinegar before meals can help moderate blood sugar spikes. It also enhances satiety, meaning you’re less likely to overeat."

More research is needed on acetic acid, but research in the National Library of Medicine suggested "chronic acetic acid supplementation is associated with significant reductions in body weight and body fat".

Apple cider vinegar, in particular, is often recommended for weight management. It is best to dilute a tablespoon of vinegar in water, as drinking it straight can damage the teeth and esophageal lining.

Another way to improve blood sugar levels and help with weight loss is to eat fibre-rich foods, particularly lentils, chickpeas and beans.

The doctor explained these are full of soluble fibre and resistant starch that slow digestion.

He said: "The high fibre content in legumes not only keeps you fuller for longer but also reduces the amount of carbohydrates absorbed.

"Adding a serving to meals can help regulate blood sugar and aid weight control."

The health pro recommended a cupboard staple food that is "hugely beneficial for losing fat".

Dr Frank advised pairing this dietary advice with a balanced lifestyle and regular exercise if trying to reach and maintain a healthy weight.

He added: "While these foods can support weight management, balance is key. Pairing them with an active lifestyle will yield the best results.

“By making small, mindful changes, you can naturally control carbohydrate intake and support a healthier body - without restrictive dieting.”
