Those who eat more protein are likely to store less belly fat, a study shows

Weight loss can be achieved with a healthy diet plan and regular exercise.

Experts have shared the foods that can speed up results and slimmers should opt for high-protein options.

They recommended foods like chicken, eggs, Greek yoghurt, tofu, nuts, beans and quark.

Protein can help with weight loss results as dieters feel fuller for longer and therefore eat fewer calories.

It is also key when exercising to help grow and maintain muscle.

A study published in the National Library of Medicine found eating more protein can boost the metabolism, reduce appetite and positively affect weight-regulating hormones.

Those who consumed more protein were also found to be associated with having less belly fat, according to research published in BMC.

It measured the intake of quality protein, carbohydrates and dietary fat in 27 healthy men and women.

The best results were found when eating high-quality protein staggered throughout the day.

Sports nutritionist at Bulk.com Abi Roberts explained why quark, chicken and beans are great sources of protein.

Quark

She said: "Quark is a type of fresh cheese that is similar to Greek yoghurt but with a slightly different taste and texture.

"It is a great source of protein and is also relatively low in calories.

"A super versatile snack or addition to a smoothie, very similar to cottage cheese. Per 100g it offers 57 calories and 14 grams of protein."

Chicken

"Chicken is a really lean protein source that isn’t particularly high in calories, offering around 160 calories in a breast, with 30 grams of protein," Abi said.

"It can be incorporated into main meals or snacks, eaten hot or cold, so fairly versatile."

Beans

She said: "Beans, peas, and lentils [are] are excellent sources of fibre, folate, and potassium, as well as being a high-protein, low-calorie plant-based food.

"They are also versatile, easy to incorporate into meals and dishes to boost the protein and nutrient content."
