Coffee offers all sorts of benefits for the cardiovascular system, but it can also throw hormones off-kilter and compromise weight management.
As the body enters menopause, a decline in oestrogen coupled with the deregulation of other key hormones alters weight distribution.
This is why many women see more fat gather around their body’s midsection during the transition period.
Speaking to My Menopause Centre, nutritionist Karen Newby explained: “You may think that having a cup of tea or coffee first thing in the morning is a great way to kickstart your system but actually, caffeine can lead to weight gain because of the way it affects our blood sugar balance.

“It creates a high (it mobilises stored glucose from the liver) and then creates a low (that shaky, faint feeling or hanger we sometimes get).
“Lows in blood sugar create a strong need to refuel with more caffeine and refined carbs.
“So switch to the natural zing of lemon instead. Let a slice of lemon steep for a few minutes before drinking. And stay away from the sugar."
The nutritionist added: “If you really can’t give up your coffee fix, stick to one. Having it with food will also reduce its effect on your blood sugar.”
The internet is rife with research showing that caffeinated beverages of all sorts affect cravings, prompting people to eat more snacks and larger meals.
According to nutritionists at Holland and Barrett, a glass of lemon water first thing in the morning benefits the body in various ways.
A key perk is that it gives the body a much-needed hydration hit after an overnight fast.
“Adequate hydration likely helps the body digest food better, and lemon water’s acid content could improve digestion of your breakfast too,” note the experts.
Water is crucial for keeping the body’s cells hydrated, but it also boosts metabolism and suppresses appetite.
Health authorities say between six to eight cups of water is optimal for shedding fat. Those who exercise may need more, however.

It should be noted that lemon water is no better than regular water when it comes to burning fat.
Because it is tasty, however, it can be used as a low-calorie replacement for other higher-calorie beverages.
Another habit to adopt first thing in the morning, according to Newby, is exercise.
“This will increase fat burn as it will get your metabolism going,” she explained. “You don’t have to sign up for boot camp - even a brisk walk around the block will work wonders.”
