Fasting can help everyone lose weight and can be a useful tool for women around menopause

Perimenopause generally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, and the change in life comes with some unpleasant symptoms.

Many women will find themselves unexplainably gaining weight, which could be brought on by insulin resistance. A medical expert has shared how when you eat can help fight this.

Insulin resistance is a common side effect during menopause but it leads to easier weight gain.

This is because sugar can build up in the blood as muscles, fat and the liver don't respond as well to insulin.

Excess sugar can be stored as fat if the body does not produce enough insulin. Luckily, some diet tips and tricks can help combat this.

Eating your final meal of the day earlier will give the body more time to fast which can "break the cycle of insulin resistance", according to founder and chief medical officer at Ayur Integrative Medicine Malathi Acharya.

She told GB News: "Eating dinner earlier in the evening, preferably by 6pm, and allowing at least 13 hours of overnight fasting helps break the cycle of insulin resistance.

"Many women either develop insulin resistance during menopause or in those that have it the condition worsens.

"When the body does not have to absorb the glucose that results from digestion of starches, insulin does not have to be secreted. This lowers the insulin levels and helps reset the receptors."

Research has shown fasting can help promote weight loss at all stages of life, not just during menopause.

A review published by the Harvard School of Public Health found a collection of studies suggesting intermittent fasting, or time-restricted eating, often leads to weight loss of around one pound per week.

It said: "A systematic review of 40 studies found that intermittent fasting was effective for weight loss, with a typical loss of seven to 11 pounds over 10 weeks.

"There was much variability in the studies, ranging in size from four to 334 subjects, and followed from two to 104 weeks."

Exercise is another important thing to consider when trying to lose weight and an expert explained the best exercise to "boost the metabolism and reduce body fat".

They said: "Strength training increases muscle mass, which boosts the resting metabolic rate, helping to manage weight more effectively."

The fitness expert added this can be particularly beneficial for women experiencing menopause and it can help them maintain a healthy weight during this transitional period.
