A doctor has shared three snacks to help Britons lose weight

The doctor believes that people can lose weight rapidly with a moderately low-carb, Mediterranean-style diet.

Ideally, snacking should be avoided, however if you're feeling peckish during the day, Dr Mosely said that veggies, cheese or berries might be the best bet.

According to Dr Michael Mosley, no matter which pathway you are on there are certain foods to stock up on - and others to stay away from.

The weight loss expert told slimmers to “avoid snacking”, as it “spikes your insulin levels between meals and tends to increase hunger”.

While eating only at mealtimes may be ideal, even the most disciplined of eaters will reach for a snack on occasion.

And for those who are peckish throughout the day, some nibbles are better for us than others.

Dr Mosley said: “Try to avoid snacks, especially on fasting days, but if required, have some non-starchy veg, a sliver of cheese or some berries.”

Dr Mosley created the 5:2 plan and The Fast 800 which are both forms of intermittent fasting.

On The New 5:2 weight loss pathway people should consume just 800 calories two days a week, following a healthy Mediterranean diet the rest of the week.

For those who don’t always fancy snacking on veggies, cheese or berries, nuts are another healthy, weight loss friendly option.

However, it’s important to steer clear of salted or sweet nuts, which can be “moreish and easy to overeat”.

Other snacks to avoid, according to Dr Mosley, are ones high in sugar.

Added sugars can be found in many popular snacks, drinks and desserts.

Those trying to lose weight should also wean themselves off adding sugar to their tea, coffee and cereal.

The expert advised that if you’re after something sweet to snack on, berries or a square of dark chocolate should do the trick.

According to the experts at Holland & Barrett, the benefits of dark chocolate are plenty.

Some studies show that eating it regularly may reduce the risk of heart disease, and it’s also considered a cholesterol-lowering food.
