The widely forgotten habit is a key reason many people struggling to shed pounds

Dehydration could be silently sabotaging your weight loss efforts, according to a leading expert.

Professor Franklin Joseph, head of Dr Frank's Weight Loss Clinic, warned that not drinking enough water might be the hidden reason many struggle to shed pounds.

"Dehydration can completely sabotage your fat loss," he said.

This issue becomes particularly problematic during hot weather when fluid loss increases through sweating.

Dehydration affects our bodies in multiple ways that hinder weight loss

The expert explains that dehydration affects our bodies in multiple ways that hinder weight loss.

"When you're even mildly dehydrated, your body's metabolism slows down, your appetite hormones become disrupted, and you're far more likely to mistake thirst for hunger," Professor Joseph explained.

This confusion between thirst and hunger leads many to reach for unnecessary snacks.

"People think they need a snack when in reality, they just need a glass of water," he said.

This confusion can lead to "unnecessary snacking, cravings for sugary foods, and a complete derailment of calorie goals". Beyond overeating, dehydration directly impacts fat-burning capabilities.

"Fat metabolism - the process of breaking down fat for energy - requires adequate water," Prof Joseph said. "If you're dehydrated, your body simply can't mobilise fat stores as effectively."

Hot weather brings additional challenges with high-calorie refreshments, with professor Joseph warning: "People end up guzzling fruit juices, iced coffees, fizzy drinks - all packed with sugar and calories."

Prof Joseph recommends staying consistently hydrated as an essential weight loss tool.

"Start your day by drinking a large glass of water - before your coffee," he advised, emphasising that successful weight loss during warmer months requires a balanced approach.

The key is to "focus on hydration, smart eating, and regular movement - even during a heatwave".

Following this advice will help ensure your fat loss journey stays on track despite the challenges of hot weather.
