The foods can get in the way of your weight loss efforts

Exercise is important for those trying to lose weight, improve strength and tone up.

What you eat before a workout is key, and some seemingly healthy foods could be hindering your weight loss results.

This is according to personal trainer and owner of Geezers Boxing, Leon Bolmeer, who warned slimmers about popular "healthy" foods that could actually impact their performance and overall weight loss.

This includes foods high in fats, sugary drinks, dairy, and avocados, in particular. These foods should not necessarily be avoided altogether, but are not going to help your results if eaten right before a workout.

Foods that slow digestion

Leon explained: "Before a workout, it’s important to avoid fibre-filled foods like wholegrain bread, whole-wheat pasta, and oats, as they can be hard to digest and may cause bloating, gas, or stomach cramps.

“Similarly, vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower should also be avoided due to their potential to cause bloating and gas. Instead, opt for lighter, more digestible options like spinach, lettuce, carrots, or even easy-to-digest vegetables like asparagus and potatoes."

Drinks

Think drinks high in sugar and caffeine. The expert explained: "While smoothies seem like a healthy way to get nutrients, many are packed with sugar and contain as many as 800 calories, which will lead to an energy spike followed by a crash.

"It's important to be aware of the ingredients and portion sizes to make sure they are suited to your health and fitness goals.

"While energy drinks can give you a boost, they will also spike blood sugar levels, raise blood pressure, and cause jitteriness, which can reduce focus and energy during a workout.

"Fizzy drinks should also be avoided, as their sugar and carbonation content can lead to bloating, cramps, and a sugar crash."

Foods high in fats

The health pro continued: "Nuts, while healthy, should be avoided pre-workout due to their high-fat content, which slows digestion and may lead to discomfort and cramping.

"Similarly, fried foods, high in saturated fats, can slow digestion and make you feel bloated, reducing your ability to move effectively during a workout."

Avocado

Avocados are not best immediately before a workout

Dairy and spice

These foods are best left for the end of your session. Leon said: "Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yoghurt can cause bloating, stomach acid, and discomfort before a workout, so it’s best to save them for post-workout recovery. Spicy foods should also be avoided, as they can lead to indigestion and cramping.”

Avocados

The expert added: "While avocados are rich in healthy fats and fibre, they can take longer to digest and may lead to cramps or bloating if eaten too close to a workout. It’s better to enjoy them after exercise, when your body can digest them more easily."
