Foods rich in protein and fibre are great for people looking to lose weight

Diet is arguably the most important factor for weight loss, and it is vital to make sure you are eating the right foods for slimming down.

A doctor has shared foods ideal for weight loss to incorporate into your diet to shed pounds effectively.

Weight loss expert Professor Franklin Joseph recommended foods rich in protein, as they "keep you full for longer and require more energy to digest".

He said: "Protein helps to maintain muscle while losing fat. An excellent choice to have is eggs. Starting the day with a high-protein breakfast can keep you full for hours."

Foods rich in fibre are excellent in "reducing cravings, slowing digestion and regulating blood sugar".

The professor recommended: "Oats, beans, whole grains, and chia seeds are simple ways to increase fibre intake. If you struggle with hunger, eating more fibre is one of the easiest solutions."

Another option is bitter foods like dark leafy greens, grapefruit and dark chocolate.

Professor Joseph advised: "They regulate digestion and reduce cravings for sweet and processed foods. Many people don't realise that eating something bitter can actually make them feel full faster."

Healthy fats can be beneficial and are not the "enemy". People might naturally steer away from fats when on a weight loss journey, but "the right kinds keep you full and stabilise blood sugar".

The weight loss expert advised: "Fat slows digestion, which helps prevent hunger spikes. Avocados, nuts, olive oil, and fatty fish like salmon provide long-lasting energy and satiety."

To improve metabolism and support a healthy gut, the expert recommended adding fermented foods to your diet. Think kimchi, sauerkraut and natural yoghurt.

Professor Joseph explained: "If your gut bacteria are out of balance, it can lead to increased hunger and cravings. A well-functioning gut can make a huge difference for weight control."

Foods rich in chromium, a key mineral for stabilising blood sugar and reducing cravings, are very beneficial for weight loss.

The expert said: "It improves insulin sensitivity, helping your body process glucose more efficiently.

"Good sources include broccoli, mushrooms, and lean meats. If you constantly crave sugar, adding more chromium-rich foods might help."

The key thing when on a weight loss journey is to not "starve yourself". It is about being "consistent" and "eating food that keeps you full and regulates metabolism".
