Christmas is a time for getting together, but making some foods swaps can make these gatherings healthier

With just over three weeks until Christmas, festive parties and gatherings are in full swing.

Speaking to GB News, a nutritionist from Warrior Jess Hillard offered her top tips on how to make healthier choices this December.

Whether cooking at home or navigating a Christmas party, the expert said some changes can be made to help you enjoy the party season without overindulging.

Change the way you cook

Jess said: "Roast dinners are far from unhealthy; however, cooking methods can make a huge difference to fat and calorie contents.

"Steaming your veggies is the best way to retain vitamins and minerals, and keeping the skin on your potatoes for added fibre is another great way to make you fuller for longer.

"If roasting, opt for olive oil over goose fat - and measure out how much oil you really are putting on roasties. You’d be surprised that a few tablespoons will be plenty."

Be mindful of snacking and canapés

She continued: "Making a sharing board for your canapés is a great option. Pack it with veggies, olives, a healthy homemade dip, plus cheese.

"Everyone loves these and they provide some nutrient-packed snacking too. During the day, opt for high protein over chocolates. Warrior CRUNCH bars are a personal favourite, as they are a high protein chocolate bar alternative."

Opt for fish alternatives over meat

Jess added: "Christmas can become very meat-heavy and it’s nice to switch it up and try lighter options.

"Fish offers a much lighter alternative as well as being lower in fat, lower in calories, high protein and high in omega-3 fatty acids (good for the brain)."

Be alcohol smart

"If you enjoy alcohol, I will never say cut it out - as it’s sometimes nice to have a glass with family and friends," the expert stated.

"However, being mindful is key. After each glass of wine, swap one for a glass of water.

"This will not only help to curb a hangover the next day but will make you more mindful of how much you are really drinking.

"Swapping wine for a gin and diet tonic is another great lower-calorie alcohol option. A large glass of wine is around 226 calories, compared to around 54 calories in a single gin with diet tonic."
