Having a fast metabolism means the body will burn fat more quickly

Metabolic health declines as you age which means it can be more difficult to shift those stubborn extra pounds in your 40s, 50s and beyond.

A nutrition coach has shared one of the best diet plans for over 40s and it can improve the metabolism and lead to easier fat-burning.

This is the Mediterranean diet, which also has various health benefits, nutrition coach at OriGym James Bickerstaff claimed.

He told GB News: "If you're over 40 and looking to lose weight, focusing on nutrient-dense foods and balanced diet plans can make a huge difference.

"Following a Mediterranean diet is a great option as it encourages you to eat whole foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains and consume healthy fats like olive oil.

"If you're over 40, this diet has properties that will keep your heart healthy and can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease."

Those who follow a Mediterranean diet plan will naturally reduce their intake of processed foods which is great for the waistline and for overall health.

The plan also focuses on whole foods that are high in protein, fibre and nutrients, such as fish, Greek yoghurt, fruits and vegetables.

Many studies have shown eating meals packed full of fibre and protein can suppress the appetite meaning slimmers will feel more satisfied while eating less.

James added: "The high-intake and healthy fats in this diet will leave you feeling full for longer, reducing your calorie intake which can support your weight loss journey.

"Another benefit of a Mediterranean diet is that your metabolic health improves which can decline as you age."

Not sure where to start? The expert has shared an example of a one-day meal plan that will give you the "full benefits" of the diet.
