The doctor said to stop skipping meals and avoid gluten-free food unless you have a medical reason

When trying to lose weight, there are many hurdles people have to overcome such as finding motivation to start and remaining consistent.

Arguably, the most important element with weight loss is diet, with slimmers needing to eat the right foods to slim down healthily.

Dr Franklin Joseph is a weight loss expert who has shared five common mistakes people make which are hindering their progress.

He explained that skipping meals is not a good idea and can backfire against individuals.

The doctor said: "Skipping meals often leads to overeating later in the day and disrupts your metabolism. Your body perceives it as a famine and holds onto fat stores."

Dr Joseph encouraged weight loss enthusiasts to focus on more balanced, portion-controlled meals instead and not overeating on healthy snacks.

"Granola bars, trail mixes, and veggie chips may be labelled as healthy, but many are loaded with sugar and calories. People assume these are guilt-free snacks," said the doctor.

"Consuming them mindlessly adds hundreds of extra calories to your day. Stick to whole foods like fresh fruits, vegetables or a handful of unsalted nuts."

Avoiding diet fizzy drinks is important too because even though they may seem like a healthier option, they still contain artificial sweeteners which can confuse the body.

"These sweeteners trick your brain into expecting sugar, which can lead to increased cravings and overeating later. Water or herbal teas are better alternatives," said Dr Joseph.

He advised people to not go gluten-free unless they have a medical reason to do so.

The expert explained: "Many gluten-free products are packed with sugar and unhealthy fats to compensate for flavour. Unless you have a gluten intolerance or celiac disease, there’s no proven benefit to cutting out gluten."

The fifth common habit individuals do when embarking on a weight loss journey is eating low-fat products. However the doctor explained that this is not necessary and is doing more harm than good.

"Fat-free products often replace fat with sugar and other additives, which can lead to weight gain,” explained Dr Joseph.

"Instead go for whole, minimally processed foods and healthy fats like those found in avocados, nuts, and olive oil."

Slimmers have also been advised by an obesity doctor types of food to limit on a weight loss journey.
