In essence, the emphasis should be on eating a balanced diet. The private healthcare provider offers the following tips to include:
- At least five portions of fruits and vegetables per day
- Choose high-fibre starchy foods such as oats, brown rice and wholegrain
- Reduced-fat dairy or soya drinks fortified with calcium
- Beans, pulses, fish and eggs
- Eat small amounts of unsaturated fats such as olive oil
- Drink six to eight glasses of water each day.
“Finally, cut out sports drinks, sugar-sweetened drinks and other foods that have a lot of added sugar in them," explains Bupa UK.
“Avoid adding salt or sugar to your meals. Be aware that low-fat options might have high amounts of added sugar in them.”
Healthline confirms that diets high in sugar (sodas, speciality coffees, fruit juices, energy drinks) are associated with visceral abdominal fat.
Visceral fat is dangerous because it is stored deep within the abdominal cavity, triggering widespread inflammation.
Healthier alternatives, according to the health body, include green tea, black coffee and high-protein drinks.
