For beautiful and healthy skin, ensure you are applying sunscreen daily

Developing an effective skincare regime is key if you want beautiful, glowing, youthful skin. According to one dermatologist, one key product may be essential.

Dr Heather MD took to YouTube to share her "best beauty advice": make a habit of wearing sunscreen.

She told women: "Wear sunscreen every single day. Don't underestimate the power of prevention."

The expert revealed she learned this lesson in her early 20s - "and it's the best thing I could have ever done for my skin".

A skincare expert spoke exclusively to GB News about how sun protection can be an excellent anti-ageing tool.

A journal published in the National Library of Medicine reads: "The most important reason behind the use of sunscreen is that it shields us from harmful UV rays, prevents premature ageing, tanning and sunburns, lowers blotchiness on the face, improves the health of the skin and lowers the incidence of skin cancer."

In another video, Dr Heather shared more essential skin care tips. Firstly, she advised women not to over-exfoliate.

While exfoliating can be helpful for certain skin types, doing it too much can lead to irritation, rashes, or hyperpigmentation.

The expert also advised ladies to choose their moisturiser carefully. Those with oily skin may feel they can skip this skincare step, however, this is not true.

Dr Heather said: "Everyone needs a moisturiser. If you have oily skin, use an oil-free moisturiser. If you have dry skin, use a really nice rich moisturiser to restore your skin barrier." If you are exfoliating, ensure you moisturise directly after this.

Next, the expert told women to make sure their skincare routine caters to their specific concerns.

For acne-prone skin, go for products that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. For fine lines and wrinkles, opt for retinol, peptides or bakuchiol.

If you're worried about hyperpigmentation or an uneven skin tone, the expert recommends picking products with ingredients such as kojic acid, niacinamide and tranexamic acid.

Dr Heather also told ladies to keep in mind that less is more. It's important to read the instructions on the packet of the product.

For example, with retinol, you only need a pea-sized amount of product for the whole face.

In a similar vein, it's important that women listen to their skin. If something irritates your skin, your best bet is to stop using it.

The expert crucially advised: "If you have burning, stinging or irritation, stop using your product and just use a gentle cleanser and a moisturiser until your skin heals."

Another way to take years off your age is by paying attention to your diet and making specific food choices, according to one expert.

A plastic surgeon spoke exclusively to GB News about the best foods to eat for younger-looking skin.

He advised looking out for four important criteria for a "youthful" complexion.
