Parking to be reduced at several off-street car parks in Brighton

Motorists are set to benefit from cheaper parking as a local authority looks to create a “fairer” approach to fees in the region.

Brighton and Hove City Council has announced a reduction in parking costs across several of its off-street car parks.

The move comes as part of a new “fairer approach” taken by the council to make it cheaper and simpler for motorists to park.

The changes, set to be introduced over the coming weeks and months, follow a review that revealed a steady decrease in the use of council car parks since 2021.

The review also found that average hourly tariffs in Brighton and Hove were higher than most other cities.

The new parking plan includes reducing the one-hour rate across all off-street, barrier-controlled council car parks.

Councillor Trevor Muten said: “These changes mark the beginning of a new approach to parking in Brighton & Hove which will be simpler and fairer for everyone.

“The parking review told us that high car park prices were deterring some people from coming into the city. Reducing one hour and evening tariffs will make it cheaper for those wanting to shop, eat and drink.”

He added: “Our new parking plan is designed to sit alongside all we’re doing to support better, sustainable transport in Brighton and Hove.

“Good, reliable bus services, electric vehicle charge points, improved walking and cycling infrastructure, together with more affordable parking options, mean we can give people real choice about how to travel around the city."

The Lanes car park will see its one-hour weekday tariff reduced by 27 per cent from £5.50 to £4.

At Regency Square, the one-hour weekday rate will reduce from £5 to £4, while the 24-hour weekday rate decreases from £32 to £25. A new flat rate of £7.50 will also replace separate evening and night-time rates.

The council is also planning further changes to optimise parking space usage around the region.

One proposal includes plans to allow resident permit holders in high-demand areas to park overnight in off-street barrier car parks.

Another planned change involves introducing paid parking in parts of the city where the uptake of parking permits is low.

These future plans are still in development, with more details to be announced in due course.
