A number of new MOT test rules have been introduced which could have an impact on drivers and garages running the crucial tests.
The MOT testing guide has been updated with new rules including DBS check requirements for testers and outline how documents should be displayed.
According to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), new rules are being rolled out about using a digital monitor for viewing areas.
The monitor must be available to view the test when requested by the vehicle presenter with rules stating that the relayed images cannot be interrupted or used for other purposes, like displaying ads.

Further updates were added to MOT testing signs and notices with the inclusion of new signage guidance.
GOV.UK states: “If the notice board displays both MOT and business documents, there must be clear and distinct separation between the MOT documents and any documents not related to MOT testing.”
From January 8, 2024, MOT garages must submit a basic DBS check for people in certain groups.
This includes new testers, an existing tester adding an additional group (A or B), a tester returning after a disciplinary period of 28 days or a longer cessation of two or five years, or a tester returning after being lapsed or suspended from testing.
The DBS check must be dated within the three months leading up to the demonstration test.
The new changes will apply to England, Scotland and Wales, with the DVA in Northern Ireland having separate rules.
A number of new rule changes were unveiled over the course of the last six months, including a crucial one for drivers and their MOT certificates.
Motorists are now able to see whether their vehicle has been included in a car recall when they go in for an MOT test.
The DVSA described it as “great news” for motorists and outlined that if there is a recall on their certificate, their vehicle manufacturer should let them know.
Drivers will be advised that they should contact their nearest DVSA dealership for information and to arrange a free repair.
Further changes were made in December, with the Government adding new changes to tests and certificates.
New changes will allow MOT testing businesses to have the flexibility not to issue a paper VT30 fail certificate.
This is being done as part of the Government’s decision to move a number of motoring services online, with motorists being able to access their test results on their digital MOT history service.
However, if a driver makes a specific request for a paper certificate for their records, the MOT testing garage must issue one.
