80 per cent of drivers have admitted to regularly breaking the speed limit on UK roads

Eight in 10 drivers regularly ignore speed limits on UK roads with Labour urged to act and crack down on rulebreakers.

It comes after a report revealed that drivers have been caught breaking the speed limit on motorways and high-speed dual carriageways, with 80 per cent occurring on 30mph or 20mph roads.

Official reports by the Department of Transport revealed that "exceeding the speed limit" caused 304 fatal collisions in 2023.

According to the RAC, 50 per cent of drivers were recorded breaking speed limits on 20mph roads representing a 46 per cent increase from a year ago.

Meanwhile, on UK motorways, drivers were found to have broken the national speed limit more times than on any other road.

In total, 58 per cent of drivers surveyed by the RAC admitted to travelling above the 70mph limit, showing a 57 per cent increase from 2023.

RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis said: "It’s concerning that our research indicates excessive speeding has become so commonplace because the consequences are very severe – a fact borne out by Government data showing it contributes to 21 per cent of all fatal collisions.

"It is particularly worrying that so much excessive speeding observed by drivers appears to take place on 20mph and 30mph roads as this is where the greatest number of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooter riders, are."

The RAC has warned that the UK needs to "bring an end" to excessive speeding and called on the Government to tackle the issue.

The motoring organisation did note that the Government is working on creating a road safety strategy to help view speeding offences as a key priority.

The report also found that the number of drivers who have broken the speed limit on 60mph roads has ramped up over the years rising to 47 per cent in 2024, while 42 per cent speed on 30mph roads.

Under UK law, drivers caught speeding can be slapped with a £100 fine and three penalty points added to a licence.

But in more serious cases, drivers could be disqualified from driving if they build up to 12 or more penalty points within a three-year period.

The report also detailed how 72 per cent of drivers will regularly drive as close to the speed limit as possible.

Interestingly, more than half of drivers surveyed (55 per cent) view the UK culture and its general acceptance of speeding as the reason for exceeding the limit, with only 23 per cent disagreeing with the narrative.

In one case, Warwickshire Police prosecuted a driver who tried to avoid two speeding tickets from fixed cameras by paying someone to provide false and misleading information about who was driving.

The driver was fined £810 and received six points on their licence and was also ordered to pay £250 and a £324 victim surcharge.

Speaking after the case, Senior Caseworker Crystal Moore said: "This particular defendant would have been eligible for a Driver Retraining Course for one offence and a Conditional Offer for the other costing her approximately £190 and three penalty points on her driving licence.

"Instead, she has potentially paid someone an unknown amount to 'deal with' her tickets, paid an unknown amount in legal counsel, and paid almost £1,400 in Court costs, fines and and been given six penalty points."
