M6 is currently closed southbound between J3 and J2

Drivers have been warned of huge delays this morning after a major crash involving six vehicles caused heavy congestion, with the M6 in Warwickshire to close southbound between J3 and J2 near Coventry.

Emergency services are currently working at the scene to deal with the incident, with National Highways warning of more than 60-minute delays.

Drivers have now been told to follow new diversion routes put in place by the agency to help alleviate traffic build-up in the area.

National Highways added that drivers should allow extra journey time and should plan ahead to avoid excess delays.

The event is expected to clear between 11.30am and 11.45am with normal traffic conditions expected to return between 12.15pm and 12.30pm.

Warwickshire Police shared: "The M6 southbound between junctions two and three is presently blocked following a collision involving six vehicles. Please find an alternative route for the time being. The northbound section is currently unaffected."

Drivers should follow the Hollow Square diversion symbol on road signs and exit the road at J3 and take the fourth exit from the roundabout onto the A444 towards Coventry.

From here, they should head south to the roundabout with the A428 Binley Road. Keep left on approach to the roundabout to take the dedicated lane to the eastbound A428 Binley Road. Follow the A428 Binley Road eastbound to the junction with the A46.

At the roundabout, drivers need to take the first exit onto the A46 Coventry Eastern Bypass. Head north on the A46 and keep left (to avoid joining the M69) to reach J2 of the M6.

At the junction roundabout, motorists need to take the fourth exit to rejoin the M6 southbound.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We currently have two ambulances and a paramedic officer at the scene of a multi-vehicle RTC between junctions 3 and 2 of the M6 following a call at 9.29am."

Updating drivers, National Highways said it was currently working with West Midlands Police to create a plan to release traffic caught within the closure.

National Highways shared: "Caught within the M6 closure? If you're caught within the southbound closure between J3 Bedworth & J2 Coventry be aware plans are being made to release you past the scene slowly.

"Thank you for your continued patience.

"The 60 minute delays are on approach to J3 where the closure begins. As you're past the closure point you are "caught within the closure".

"You'll be released past the scene slowly once a number of oil spillages have been treated."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

One driver caught in the traffic shared his frustration: "Three hours and counting. Got animals with me who are desperate for the toilet and have no drinks for them or myself as this was supposed to be a 20 minute journey. Complete Highways shambles as per usual. You could've broken the flow and turned those stuck around rather them leave them stuck."

Delays of 60 minutes still remain in place with approximately two miles of congestion on approach to the closure at J3.
